First Lines: Stage Two

Your child can make a line and a circle on purpose, and the cross, the slanted line and the square each ask the hand for something it has not had to do before.

What’s inside

  • Forty activities, every one different, no filler and no repeats, in four sections: crosses, slanted lines, squares and corners, then the X and the triangle.
  • Wide paths that narrow as your child gets steadier, and support that fades away: curbs and an arrow at first, then a gray line, and at the end only a dot to start from.
  • A ready check at the front so you start in the right place instead of guessing, and a grown-up note at the foot of every activity: what it builds, and what to do if it turns out to be hard.
  • Deliberately heavy lines made for little hands and chunky crayons, guidance for left-handed children, and an honest note on pencil grip.
  • Single-sided printing throughout, so a torn-out page takes nothing with it.

Who this is for

Stage One taught the line and the circle, and four harder shapes come next, each asking the hand to do something it has not had to do before. The cross needs two strokes to meet. A slanted line has no edge of the paper to copy, so the angle has to be held in the head. A square is not really four lines at all: it is three moments where the crayon has to stop and set off again in a new direction.

This book takes them one at a time, in the order they usually arrive, and the last section, the X and the triangle, is deliberately a stretch so there is somewhere to go next.
